Garden Shed Design: A Place Of Your Own
Unfortunately my current garden shed is full to the brim with my gardening tools, my children's bicycles and lots of junk. However, at one time, the garden shed was a place of my own in which I would enjoy myself potting up seedlings and other gardening tasks or simply sitting and reading that months gardening magazine. These days I am in desperate need of another garden shed and this, obviously, brings me onto the topic of garden shed design which I will be discussing throughout this article.
Getting The Right Garden Shed Design
Such a large item as a garden shed should not be an impulse buy as you really need to think long and hard about what type of garden shed would be most suitable for you. If you are starting a garden from scratch then virtually any garden shed design can be incorporated into your landscape garden plans but, if like me, you already have a mature garden then a little more thought is required on where you may place your shed for best advantage.
The humble garden shed was, at one time, a favorite in many a comedy TV show. Typically it would be the place where a guy would keep his motorbike, his homebrew beer or wine, where he may even create a small room just for himself. Most garden shed are where we keep our lawnmower and other gardening tools and equipment.
Today there are a multitude of different garden shed designs available some are simple lean-to storage type sheds whereas others have a large glazed area where you can grow plants and seedlings rather like you would in a greenhouse (though such features are usually only found in the larger sheds).
To choose the right garden shed design for you it will be necessary to first decide upon exactly what you will be using your shed for. Will it be purely for extra storage, will it be for your motorbike or will it act as an all purpose gardening building? If it is simply for storage you will only really need small windows and a lean-to style with no windows may be perfectly suitable. However if you plan to use it for gardening tasks you may want to have a design which incorporates more windows and even windows on each side.
The next thing you need to consider is the size of the shed. It is here that things can get a little complicated as many people often discover that the shed they have purchased is quickly full to the brim rather like my own. However it would be equally awful if you had gone to the expense of buying yourself a very large garden shed only to find that little of the space is ever used. Another consideration is the amount of space available in your yard and the impact that such a building will have upon your garden design.
Once you have decided upon the size of your perfect shed and the purpose for which it will be used you can then concentrate on the actual garden shed design itself. A s I have already said a simple lean-to shed will often suffice whereas at other times you will want a larger shed with several windows but there are plenty of other design aspects to consider. What material would be best? What color do you want it? What should the roofing material be? In later articles I shall investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the various materials used in garden sheds but for now I shall leave the choice up to yourselves.
