Garden Trellis Design Creates Spaces

Garden trellis

Garden trellis design can play an important role in defining the various spaces of the garden. A trellis has the distinct advantage of being able to clearly define a boundary while avoiding being too imposing. The effect can also entice a person to look beyond the space in which they are presently as a trellis offers tantalizing glimpses into what lies beyond. I used this aspect of garden trellis design in a very small yard once to create the illusion of a much larger garden (see "Using A Raised Garden Bed Design " for details).

Another great advantage to using garden trellis is that it is a fantastic support for plants which would, ordinarily, grow up against a wall or fence. This means that you can add height in areas where it is required by using it to support such things as climbing roses, ivy or clematis. I like to grow sweet peas on trellis so that it is easy to cut the flowers for use in the home. I find it much easier to cut them this way rather than on the bamboo cane teepee type construction usually used.

Creating Private Spaces Using Garden Trellis Design

Where once the garden patio ruled supreme an area of decking is now the choice for most. It is here that most of the best advantages of the trellis come to the fore. Of course much depends on the garden trellis design but most designs create a screen which is perfect for use on decking to create a private space. I have a family so sometimes we enjoy having a private space while at other times we like to sit and look out across the garden. At other times we like to sit and watch the children play. This means that sometimes we appreciate a screen while at others we wish it wasn't there. The solution was a portable screen so I created a garden trellis design which had large planters on wheels with trellis across the back.

We have these planters planted with low shrubs and climbing roses and clematis growing up the trellis. We usually have them fixed in place against the wall of the house in our backyard but when we want to have a meal out on our decking, or at any other time we may want a little extra privacy, we simply slide the planters and trellis into position to create a most beautiful looking privacy screen.
