Choosing Your Landscaping Garden Design
Your choice of landscaping garden design is an important one, not only for the fact that it will take work to create it, but for the plain and simple fact that you will have to live with it for a great many years (or expend more time and energy changing it later). Too many people spend too little time planning their garden and often end up impulse buying a plant that has caught their eye and then planting it wherever it will fit in their garden. There are two major flaws in this method of gardening, the fact that plants may not go well together and the fact that often plants are placed in areas where they simply will not survive for any number of reasons. Another reason why you should invest the time required in landscaping garden design, besides the fact you will end up with a more beautiful garden, is that you will, over time, end up saving time and money.
For those of you who are reading this page just for the sake of passing time and have a mild interest in gardening let me tell you that having a beautiful garden need not be expensive and it may not need a great deal of effort and even less maintenance - BUT, only if you plan things well. You see it is perfectly plausible to create a garden which will look after itself and look more beautiful each and every year. By buying small young plants you can save money (as these plants are much, much cheaper than mature plants) but also add interest as they grow each year. If you invest a small amount in a variety ground cover plants you will discover that they grow quickly covering the ground smothering weeds. By adding an irrigation system, which can be a simple porous hose trailed through your garden, the only garden maintenance need only be the turning of a tap every now and again through the summer months!
Avoid Disaster With Landscaping Garden Design
Another reason for planning a garden before you plant your first tree, shrub, perennial or annual plant, is that you can avoid so many gardening disasters that, at the very least, can cost a fair amount of money, and at worst, be a danger to life. Now this may sound dramatic but read on.
1. Know your yard: Many people advise that you study your yard for a full 12 months before planning a garden so that you can identify such things as shaded and sunny areas. You must also take note of any nearby building, overhanging roofs or cables or any other obstruction such as large trees.
2. Know the users: Who is going to be using the garden, children playing, young adults entertaining or an elderly couple relaxing. Whoever is using the garden can influence the design greatly.
These two factors will determine your landscaping garden design with regards to which plants can be planted where and what structures will be required or best avoided. Obviously you will not want a large open pond in a garden which will be used by young children and we will be looking into such things in later articles but, for now, all you need to understand is that garden design is an important part of gardening and the choice made an important one.
