The ideal place for a rock garden would the area of your yard that does not have a lot of sun or has very hard compacted soil. You can make the rock garden as large or small as you want depending again on the size of your yard. The only other factor to consider when positioning your rock garden is water. You do not want to position your rock garden where there is likely to be a substantial amount of water run-off.

The beauty of designing a rock garden is that, with a little thought and planning, they can be very low maintenance and, in most cases, they can be left to their own devices. There are plants available that are specifically for rock gardens and do not need much looking after. These type of plants spread and grow rapidly, so in no time at all you will have an established and attractive rock garden. Just make sure before planting that the rocks are secure and not likely to collapse in severe weather conditions or if you have to stand on them.

Choosing the correct type of rocks for your garden is just as important as choosing the correct plants and flowers. Rocks for use in rock gardens can be purchased and delivered by your local garden center, but I much prefer to use rocks and stones that are found lying around the local area. This way you are likely to have a greater variety of color, size and shape of rock.

How you install your rock garden very much depends upon the look you are trying to create. Do you want to create a rock garden that blends in naturally with the rest of the garden and looks as though it has always been there, or do you want to create something that stands out and catches the eye. Whatever your choice just make sure that the rocks are stable. One does not have to use rock plants in a rock garden or rockery, larger spaces between rocks could be filled with soil and planted with smaller flowers such as primroses.

Last but not least, remember that, in rock garden design, therocks can be used in any type of garden and in many different imaginative ways. Smaller sized rocks can be used for creating unusual pathways or for sprinkling around the flower beds. They can also be used in water features too.
