Small Garden Design is something of a specialist area but after years of experience of having to do my own gardening in small spaces I have gained much experience which I plan to share on Landscaping Info 4U. Below is a brief introduction to small garden design basics which is followed by a small list of links to other relevant articles to be found elsewhere on our site. In the not too distant future we plan to have a whole section dedicated to small garden design so please make a note of this url if you too have to do your gardening in a small yard or backyard.

The society in which we live today is becoming increasingly health conscious. This is due to the massive increase of obesity which in turn increases ones chance of heart disease and cancers. Not only are people opting for a healthier diet but also an organic diet. Organic foods have not been treated with chemicals and pesticides, which many people say can actually contribute to some forms of cancer. If you are worried that your garden is too small for growing vegetables you could not be more wrong, one does not need acres of land to grow enough vegetables for oneself.

If growing vegetables is how you wish to use your small garden area then remember that different vegetables grow and produce at different rates. The most common method of planning your vegetable patch is planting by variety and using the crop rotation method. The successful vegetable grower will always have a vegetable that is ready for harvesting. Do not always rely on the instructions on labels or seed packets as factors such as climate and weather can have profound effects on growth and production. Don't forget to protect your plants and seeds from birds and other small creatures such as rabbits. Rabbits in particular can destroy a vegetable patch in a matter of minutes - so be warned.

A Simple Solution To The Problem Of Small Garden Design

When designing the smaller garden, there is one way of planting and growing all that you desire or wish for. This method of design is known as the 'square foot method'. This entails allocating a square foot for every variety of vegetable planted. You can separate each square foot by using either pathways or planks of wood. By doing this you can avoid trampling on or damaging your plants, which is easily done in a small garden space.

Small garden design can be made so easy by simply following the square foot method of gardening which means that you can have a successful crop of vegetables and fruits throughout the seasons of the year, year after year. Remember that once a crop has been harvested it is best to plant a different variety of vegetable in that area (crop rotation). When planning and planting your vegetables always double check that they will be ready for harvesting before the frost and cold weather arrive.

By following a few simple rules, it is possible to design the perfect small garden, and become self-sufficient with regard to organic vegetables, herbs and some fruits. So if anyone tells you that you need a large garden to grow fruit and vegetables, you can tell them that this is not the case and that small garden design can be fun and rewarding.
