Factors To Consider When Buying A Garden Fountain Pump

A garden fountain pump

Reading about water fountains on our site will quickly furnish you will all manner of useful information which we hope will help guide you in making the correct decisions about which garden fountain design to use. In most cases you will, most probably, decide upon buying a complete package but there are occasions when you will need to buy extra fixtures and fittings and even larger components such as a garden fountain pump. If you are replacing a worn out pump then you can simply replace is with the same, or a replacement model but, obviously, if if you have decided to build your own garden fountain then you will need to consider your choice of garden fountain pump a little more and the article below should help you to understand the basic factors to consider.

Important Points To Understand

One of the first things to consider is how powerful your pump should be. This depends on a number of factors and you may need to do a little math to calculate the exact requirements, if this sounds difficult don't worry as you can simply take note of the following and take those notes to a retailer who will be able to work it all out for you.

You will need to have some idea of how much water your garden fountain pump will need to displace and this depends on the following; how fast the flow of the water will be and how much water will be flowing. To get a rough idea you can measure the size of your pond or water container (width, breadth and depth) and make a note of how wide any pipe will be or how wide you will want the spout of water to be.

Another point to consider is how far the water will need to be displaced and this depends on how much higher the outlet will be than the water container, pool or pond, or how high you will want your spout of water to reach. Again a few measurements will help here to determine how many gallons of water per hour your garden fountain pump will have to displace.

Which Type of Garden Fountain Pump To Use

There are various types of pump available but there are two specific types of electric motor; magnet-driven and direct drive. Most pumps available today are still direct drive and all older models will all be direct drive as magnetic pumps are still something of a new invention (most often used in indoor fountains, such as tabletop fountains, as they are not as hard wearing as direct drive electric motors).

Another factor to consider is if you want a submersible pump or one which sits alongside your water feature or in a nearby container, shed or other outbuilding. If you need a very large and powerful pump and you want to have it submersed then you will need to make sure that it is not too large for such a purpose. I know of cases where clients have requested an enormous amount of water displacement per hour from the smallest of containers and in such cases a submersible pump could not be an option as it simply would not fit but this is an extreme example.

A final point of consideration is the power supply. Most garden fountain pumps need to be connected to a mains supply but it is possible to run the from a battery. However a cool option which has only recently become available at a reasonable price is solar powered garden fountain pumps. Such pumps are really only suitable for installations which require only a small amount of water displacement but it is certain worth considering as a viable alternative for many situations.
