Choosing A Garden Fountain Pump

A fountain in your garden can add a touch of sophistication and really work well with your plants. However, you must keep in mind that while fountains are pretty, they are essentially machines, which mean that you’ll need some sort of plan for setting them up, powering them, and so on. The main part that you’re concerned with is the pump for your garden fountain, which will drive the water up and through the spouts on your fountain. What follows is a discussion of the things to consider when purchasing a garden fountain pump.

Direct Drive Or Magnet-Driven?

Traditional garden fountain pumps are direct-drive pumps, which run off an electric motor. For most outdoor uses, the direct drive pump is what you’ll be looking for when looking for a garden fountain pump. Magnet driven pumps are a newer invention and are what make the newer, tabletop fountains possible, but these pumps are often prone to jamming and better for indoor applications.

Be Aware Of Size

No matter which type of garden fountain pump you use, find out the gallons per hour of your pump and match it to the size of your fountain. A good match is about 100 gallons per hour for every inch of stream width at the top of your fountain. If you have any questions about this when purchasing your fountain, your salesperson should be able to tell you how many gallons per hour your fountain will require and match it to a garden fountain pump for you.

Another size issue to consider is the actual size of the pump in relation to your fountain. Ideally, you want the pump to be hidden completely by the fountain. So, in order to accomplish this, if you have a choice between two very similar and adequate garden fountain pumps, choose the one that fits easier in your fountain.

Power

Whether your garden fountain pump is small or large, it will need some sort of power source or it won’t run. If your garden fountain pump isn’t placed near an existing outlet, you have a couple of options: you can install an outlet or you can use solar power. Solar power is the more expensive option initially, but if your fountain is located where it will get plenty of sun, it is ultimately the most cost effective option and easier to install than an outlet far away from the house. By considering all of the listed options above, you will be able to choose a garden fountain pump that works great for the fountain you’ve purchased, adding to the beauty of your garden.
