Using Sculptures As A Garden Fountain

In the previous two articles we took a look at the Victorian period and how we can use this period in modern garden design. I mentioned that the Victorians were heavily influenced by the classical period taking elements from diverse periods such as the Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Gothic periods. While much of this influence is displayed in many British civic buildings various other elements of design influenced smaller items and one such item, which continues to influence us to this day, is the garden fountain sculpture.

When using sculptures in you garden or garden fountain you can gain many ideas by taking a look at the Victorian period and those periods which influence their designs. Some famous sculptures or characters from history and mythology are fantastic designs which can be replicated for use in garden fountain sculpture. If you want something other than these classic designs you can use virtually anything in the world as a subject of your sculpture but items from nature, such as animals and birds, work the best.

If you are not making your own garden fountain sculpture you will be pleased to know that there are countless sculptures available which are highly suitable for use in fountains and it is relatively easy to find a complete fountain with a sculpture though this route may prove rather expensive, especially if you opt to purchase one of natural stone. Even those created using reconstituted stone or even concrete can also cost large sums. It is possible to buy ones made from a man made material but watch out for those which are extremely cheap as they are often very light and not so hard wearing as the alternatives.

The important thing to remember, when using a sculpture as a water fountain, is that the material used should be able to withstand the weather and the presence of plenty of flowing water, both of which can seriously damage weak substances. As a rule it is best to stick with types of stone or bronze. Stone such as marble can look fantastic when the water hits them as water seems to bring out unseen color and beauty which does not exist in the stone when it is dry. Bronze can look better when wet but over time bronze ages very well and many people much prefer the material when it has aged. If you prefer to keep your bronze sculpture looking fresh and new you will have to be prepared to spend time cleaning it often.
