The Iron Gazebo

An Iron gazebo

If you take a wander around an old British seaside town, such as Southport in the north west of England, you will notice much of the most beautiful aspects are usually are of Victorian origins. During the Victorian era cast iron was a recent invention which was utilized in a variety of different ways but most noticeably in the decoration of public buildings. In Southport ornate iron work can be seen for, almost, the full length of the main street (Lord Street) in the wonderful awnings to the shops along one side. Over on the other side of the street are a number of items of beauty including a wonderful bandstand which looks rather like an iron gazebo.

In fact iron gazebos were incredibly popular at this time and many started to appear in public places such as public parks or in the center of villages. Not far from the town center of Southport is the wonderful village of Churchtown which has retained much of its buildings and character from the Victorian era. One of the most beautiful places in the village are the Botanical Gardens, which are well worth a visit if you are a keen gardener, where you will find more than one iron gazebo.

Why Use An Iron Gazebo In Your Yard?

As you can see, from the photograph above, iron gazebos look wonderful and rather than looking overbearing they are, in fact, rather ornate. If you are creating a Victorian garden design then the addition of this type of gazebo will greatly help in setting the correct mood and ambience and add an element of authenticity to your design.

Of course iron gazebos can be used in any garden design and one of the great advantages to using iron as the building material is that it is able to be painted virtually any color you like. Black is best used to create a period look but other gardens may require something a little more colorful and with an iron gazebo you are really only limited by your own imagination.

Iron gazebos are adaptable and can be constructed or dismantled in a relatively short time with the aid of a friend. The portability of this type of structure adds to its usefulness but it can also be a permanent structure too. Iron gazebos can look great painted white and decorated with cut flowers and placed in the middle of a lawn, especially for such events as a family wedding, but a quick change of color and decoration and you can use it in other events, such as a Halloween garden party.

There is something about the openness of an iron gazebo which makes it highly adaptable but if you prefer an enclosed gazebo you can simply fill the sides with panels of various materials. In fact it is not too difficult to add these panels in such a way as they are easily removed so that you have the best of both worlds, an open or an enclosed gazebo, whichever mood you are in.
