The Wrought Iron Gazebo

In the previous article we took a look at the iron gazebo and for this article we shall look at the wrought iron gazebo and some of the ways in which you can maintain it so that it always looks at its very best.
Wrought iron is a wonderful material to work with as it is very easy to create ornate curves and twists that simply would not be possible with other materials used in gazebo production. As we have seen in the previous article the wrought iron gazebo became popular in the Victorian era and therefore it has rather an antique look to it. This is true in most cases but this really depends upon the actual design as you can easily adapt these gazebos to look highly modern by simply using different gazebo covers, drapes or other adornments and decorations.
Revitalizing An Old Iron Gazebo
Although you usually see a wrought iron gazebo with the ironwork painted black and a rather plain roof it is possible to radically change this by simply painting both a different color. It is amazing how vastly different your gazebo will look with a simple color change and, all of a sudden, your garden can look totally refreshed and revitalized by the simple application of a coat of paint.
If you decide to paint your wrought iron gazebo a new and different color it is extremely important that you follow a few simple steps to ensure that all goes well. Firstly you will need to ensure that all surfaces are clean and free from grease, dirt and moisture. Although it is possible to paint your gazebo while it is constructed it is a great idea to dismantle it carefully and paint each individual component. By doing this you can ensure that all surfaces are protected but if you decide to leave it erected you really do need to ensure that all corners and joints are moisture free and that any screws and bolts are still able to be removed when painted.
Once the surface has been thoroughly cleaned and dried you should always apply a coat of primer which has anti rust properties. If you can not obtain such a primer simply treat the iron with an anti rust treatment before painting, if you are changing from a dark color, such as black, to a lighter color you should allow for a number of coats of paint, the same is true if you have a light colored wrought iron gazebo which you want to paint dark.
The wrought iron gazebo pictured at the top of this page is a modern design taking much from the Victorian period. While it clearly has an antique look and feel the simple addition of a few drapes can change its appearance dramatically. Another way in which you can change the appearance of your gazebo is to use different lighting. Gazebos are great for evening entertaining and barbecues, the addition of a few quality outdoor lights can make a world of difference.
