Growing Vegetables In Greenhouses

Some plants and vegetables growing in a large greenhouse

It is my own, honest, opinion that food has, for almost a decade, has been vastly under-priced. I can not remember ever seeing such large amounts of cheap food available from all regions of the world. I also find it difficult that it is often the case that food grown in other countries and transported here is often cheaper than homegrown produce. Maybe this is one of the reasons why high quality organic produce seems to be so much more expensive. If, like me, you want to eat more produce which is organic may be interested in growing vegetables in greenhouses which we discuss in the following article.

Another, maybe more important, reason why growing vegetables in greenhouses is a superb idea is that it is virtually impossible to buy fresher produce as you can cook it immediately after harvesting. As most of us know, the fresher the fruit or vegetables the more the vitamins, which basically means that vegetables grown in your greenhouse are much better for you than vegetables bought in a shop, even if they are organic!

Why Use A Greenhouse?

There are a number of reasons why growing plants in a greenhouse is often much better than growing them out in the open. One of the most obvious reasons is that it is simply not possible to grow some types of plants outdoors in some regions. Although vegetables are generally hardy plants there are some types that need to be grown under glass, especially if you live in a colder area or in an exposed site with a prevailing wind.

If, like me, you live in a northerly region you will understand that sometimes a greenhouse is the only way you can extend the growing season. The further north you live the shorter the growing season and winters are generally much harsher. In some places growing vegetables in greenhouses is really the only feasible option. In such places it is common to see heating and lighting systems to extend the growing season still further.

One of the most widely known uses of the greenhouse is to grow exotic plants such as orchids. It is certainly possible to grow some types of exotic fruit and vegetables but one of the most common reasons for growing vegetables in greenhouses is that it is often necessary to start your plants off in the greenhouse and then harden them off before planting them outside, brassicas (Brassicaceae) spring to mind when I mention this aspect of greenhouse gardening.

Finally, vegetables grown organically in your own greenhouse are often cheaper than organic produce available to purchase.
