Growing Your Own Plants In Window Greenhouses

If, like me, you find that having a small yard and back yard excludes you from having such things a a garden shed and greenhouse then growing plants indoors may be your only option so you should really take a look at using window greenhouses. These small greenhouses give you many of the advantages of the larger greenhouse but on a much smaller scale. Obviously this creates a number of unique advantages and disadvantages which we shall examine in the article below.

The Advantages And Disadvantages To Using A Window Greenhouse

I have used an indoor greenhouse ever since I very first left the family home. I feel that there is something really special about having just that little bit of greenery in your home, this is especially true if you have a very small yard or, in some cases, no yard at all. In reality you can grow almost anything indoors if you have the space and the right conditions. I prefer to grow plants on my kitchen windowsill but, from time to time, I have been known to take over other areas of the house.

One of the advantages of growing plants in the kitchen is that your sink is close to hand. This is not only handy because of the availability of water but also because your window greenhouse will need to be thoroughly cleaned at times. It is especially important to make sure that you clean your greenhouse before you add new plants, this helps reduce the risk of disease and other problems.

Unfortunately a plant growing in an indoor greenhouse will never really get as much sunlight as those plants growing out in the open. Some manufacturers produce home greenhouses which are supplied with built in grow lights which can be used at all times and controlled with a timer device. Grow lights produce the correct balance of blue and red light in which plants grow best. Although these kits are often more expensive than alternatives your plants will certainly benefit greatly by this extra light source. Make sure that you remember that this this type of greenhouse, and those with heaters, will require a power source.

Another disadvantage the window greenhouse is that it is not always possible to grow tall plants. As you can see, in the example shown above, the growing space is sometimes limited. While these greenhouses are perfectly suitable for seedlings and small plants, such as some types of herb, they are not really suitable for large plants such as tomatoes. If you wish to grow tall plants you may be able to find one which can be extended as the plant grows but in most cases I would suggest growing your plants until they are just about getting to big for your window greenhouses then start to take the cover off during the day until you can leave it off permanently without detriment to your plant.
