Homemade Hydroponics Systems (cont.)
In our previous article we introduced you to homemade hydroponics systems and in the following article we will look at some of the aspects of growing your plants using your new system. Growing plants is a great hobby to have not only does it provide you with healthy food but it should also help reduce stress levels, we hope that the following article helps you to avoid some of the likely stressful areas of growing plants with hydroponics.
Important Factors To Keep In Mind
Dedication: Dedication is the most important factor of all as you will be facing new challenges that you will never have had to face in the garden. At first it might be difficult to get your head around the fact that you are growing your plants without soil but, with a little extra study and a great deal of effort you will, eventually, master the new skills required.
Precision: Precision is the order of the day with hydroponics and you may find that your homemade system is not as easy to control as some of the more expensive systems. However, with some dedication, you will quickly adapt and, using your Ph and EC meters you will be able to keep things under control.
Help is at hand: Hydroponics is becoming an incredibly popular hobby enjoyed by many but there are many beginners, just like you, who need a helping hand. Many people are faced with unforeseen problems that seem to overwhelm them but to seasoned growers there is usually a simple solution. The great news is that there are plenty of web sites and a number of forums where beginners and seasoned professionals alike openly discuss and solve their problems. Do not be afraid to ask the most simple questions as we all have to start somewhere.
Some Of The Basics
Once you have built your homemade hydroponics system (see previous article for details) it should just be a simple case of keeping your plants healthy. Unfortunately this may be the case in the garden but in hydroponics you will need to pay almost constant attention to your plants. At the very first sign that something is wrong you should immediately get to work checking the levels of nutriments.
As well as nutriment levels you will need to keep an eye on the temperature of the solution and the atmosphere, both should be the same and at the correct level for the plant you are growing.
Water quality is one of the most important things to keep an eye on. If you are forced to use tap water always make sure that it is filtered as some of the chemicals it contains are extremely harmful to plants. You should make sure that you completely change your water about once a fortnight.
Homemade hydroponics systems can be a great money saver but it is extremely important that as soon as you start growing your plants you do not try to save pennies. If you need to buy more fertilizer then do so well in advance as running out of nutrients and minerals, or not using enough, can cause the total failure of a crop. Even if it is only for a short period the results will be disastrous.
