References have been found in texts, dating as far back as the 1600's on how to use hydroponics. This proves that this technique, of growing plants without the aid of soil, has been around for centuries. The scientifically minded men of the earlier centuries experimented greatly with this technique, and one documented experiment was done using the spearmint plant. After a lot of trial and error, these early scientists discovered that the spearmint plant grew more successfully in water that contained impurities, rather than water that did not have any.
Over the last four hundred years or so, research on how to use hydroponics has never ceased, it is just that we don't hear about it very often. Behind closed doors botanists, horticulturists and scientists are constantly experimenting trying to improve the technique, and finding ways of improving plant and crop yields. The gentleman who originally came up with the name for this technique, successfully grew this way for years in the back yard of his home.
Slowly but surely the larger industry corporations are continually trying to surpass each other by improving upon the current method of hydroponics currently used. Hydroponics has now become popular with smaller corporations too, especially those involved in the home-based market. These smaller businesses are targeting the ordinary man on the street and encouraging him to change over to hydroponics. There are various advantages to using hydroponics and a couple of facts they could point out in any sales literature are; you do not need any soil, therefore making this a much cleaner method and that plants can be grown indoors in water all year round without worrying about what season it is.
