Hydroponics Supply
In the following article we begin to examine the world of the hydroponics supply. The article below is a brief introduction to the topic but in our next article in this series we shall concentrate upon online aspects of hydroponics, so, for this reason, we only touch upon that topic here.
If you have been following our series of articles about hydroponics you should now have a complete understanding of the basics and you will be ready to get started on you own hydroponics project. Before you start getting your hands dirty I would like to suggest that you create a checklist of those supplies you will need at start up and another checklist of things you will need on an ongoing basis.
Once you have the two lists complete you will be able to calculate your total immediate budget and also be able to estimate the ongoing costs. Relating this to the amount of plants you will be growing and the time it will take from germination of seed (or rooting of cuttings) you should be able to estimate the likely electricity costs and from all of the gathered information you should be able to estimate the likely unit cost (the cost per plant).
When calculating the unit cost it is important to remember that this is only an estimate. Also consider the fact that a direct price comparison between your home grown produce and that obtained from a store is not 100% fair as you gain a couple of important benefits from growing your own.
Firstly there is the enjoyment factor, you simply can not put a price on the thrill of seeing a seed germinating and caring for it until it hits the family table for all to enjoy.
Secondly you are fully aware of what the plant has been exposed to. You know what chemicals have been used or not used. If you are growing organic vegetables then you know if it is 100% organic or not etc.
Hydroponics Supply Companies
There are several well known companies with years of experience, online and offline, and while it can be beneficial to purchase any regular supplies from them there may be a better option. While large stores can offer slightly lower prices than a small retailer you will benefit greatly from buying supplies from a smaller local business than a larger organization. Primarily this is because you will be able to build up a personal relationship with the supplier but also because you can often get quality help and advice for free from such people. In the next article we shall examine this in more detail when we look at buying hydroponic supplies online.
