Indoor Container Gardening For House & Home

A tree growing in an indoor container

When people think of container gardening most people bring to mind all manner of unusual containers, in a garden, overflowing with blooming flowers. However it can great to involve yourself in indoor container gardening and while many of the articles, in this section, focus upon upon such things as growing herbs, it is also possible to grow much larger plants indoors in various containers.

At one time I was fanatical about growing plants indoors, admittedly this was at a time when I lived in a flat with no garden but it enabled me to enjoy gardening when, otherwise, it would have been impossible. One of the most fascinating things that I discovered is that, with indoor container gardening, it is possible to grow almost anything that would grow in a garden and many species that would simply not survive outdoors. In all I was greatly surprised at the range of plants I could grow.

When I first started growing plants indoors I had the usual house plants purchased from a nearby general store. They were rather poor quality and though I tried very hard, they did not last very long. Rather than accept defeat I set about learning more and experimented greatly in the types of plants I grew.

Indoor container gardening can actually be rather exciting and one of my most exciting experiences was the time when I discovered that I could actually grow trees indoors. I love trees and even today my small front yard has far too many trees than should actually be growing in such a small space. Although I am interested in bonsai I simply do not have the patience, I want things there and then and this was especially so when I was younger. When I discovered that a tree could survive indoors there was no holding me back and my front room was quickly filled with all manner of plants ranging from parlour palms to a huge fig tree (my pride and joy).

While I would not advise all to grow such an indoor jungle as I did those wishing to become involved in indoor container gardening should consider both large and small indoor plants. Often hallways are bare places which, at most, may feature a mirror, telephone and/or hanging coats. Such a hallway could be brought to life by the addition of a small number of plants or maybe even one single large one, such as an indoor fig tree (I love them). Bathrooms too can be wonderful places to add an indoor plant or two.
