Garden & Lawn Care Essentials

Weed & Feed

In the previous article we took a look at lawn care DIY which took in the use of weed and feed products including spreaders. While these two items can make a world of difference and make garden lawn care something of a breeze there are a number of other items which every gardener should have, especially when it comes to the care of your area of lush green grass.

Below is a selection of garden lawn care essentials;

Edging Iron

Key to a good looking lawn is a clearly defined edge which sets your plants and flowers apart from your patch of grass. Getting a nice clean cut to the edge of the turf is not as easy as it sounds. Many people choose to use an ordinary garden spade and while this will often suffice you really can't beat a quality edging iron. Edging irons are inexpensive items which, if kept sharp, will make trimming the edge of your lawn far easier.

Here's a good garden lawn care tip, if the edge of your grass has become too rough rather than trim it back why not use your edging iron to cut a square turf and turn it around so that the inside edge is now on the outside. If there is a small gap simply back fill it and, if needed, sprinkle a little lawn seed.

Garden Fork

Using a garden fork to puncture holes into your lawns is one of the easiest ways in which to improve drainage and allow air to penetrate deeply. All you need do is dig in the fork every foot (30cm) or so and the job is done.

Scarifier

A garden rake is one of the most useful of garden lawn care tools. It can be used to clear away dead leaves and other debris but it can be used to scarify the lawn too. If your budget allows there are electric scarifiers available and some lawn mowers can be fitted with special attachments capable of doing the job.

Watering Equipment

A hose or sprinkler is the best option for watering your lawn but you will have to keep an eye and ear out for any bans in your area unless you are happy to end up in hot water. A watering can may be ok for a small lawn only. There are a number of solutions on the market but do not be fooled into buying expensive garden lawn care watering systems if you can do without.

Lawnmower, Strimmer etc.

There are a few electrical lawn care tools you can not do without. The lawnmower is an essential item and unless you really want a manual one electric lawnmowers can be found cheap these days. For difficult to cut areas a strimmer will do the job in seconds.

This concludes my list of essentials and in the next article I will take a closer look at some of the equipment currently available.
