Basic Lawn Care Advice
Throughout this section of Landscaping Info 4U we shall be looking at the lawn and how to look after it. In this collection of articles we shall be sharing much lawn care advice, hints and tips, which we have learnt through many years of experience caring for lawns in a variety of environments which range from the colder northern areas to southerly hot and dry regions. Lawn care in different areas can be radically different and what may be applicable in one region may cause devastating damage in another. For this reason the lawn care advice we share shall, usually, be of a general nature which can be used to your advantage wherever you live. Where there are distinct and important differences we shall make this as clear as possible.
Lawn Care Essentials
We started this section with a basic introduction to lawn care and where to get advice about caring for your lawn. In the next subsection we will be taking a closer look at some of the tools and equipment that you must own to be able to maintain the perfect lawn. The best lawn care advice I can give is to get the very best tools and equipment that you can afford, this is because you very often get exactly what you pay for and cheaper tools are less effective, harder to use and they certainly do not last as long. The initial expense of quality tools may seem extortionate but I promise you that they, virtually always, end up paying for themselves many times over.
Following our look at tools we shall look a little at fertilizers and other chemicals and substances which are often used in lawn care. This has been, for some time, something of a hot topic with those people who battle for the environment declaring war on such things. However we take a balanced view and use both types, we take a look at organic methods later. It is here that I feel most strongly and wish to share some further lawn care advice, use your own judgment! Sometimes organic methods are simply not capable of solving a certain problem and the only solution is to use a chemical substance which, if used incorrectly, can cause harm but, as all gardeners know, we work with nature not against it!
After looking at such things as aeration, and a few other hints and tips for the perfect lawn, we begin to look at maintenance. Maintenance can be a thorny issue, too many people think that a lawn cares for itself and all you have to do is water it if the weather remains dry too long. If I only give one piece of lawn care advice it would be that you think long and hard about what you need, expect and what time you can afford and where you live, BEFORE you decide which seed or turf to buy. While it is possible to buy dwarf seed it may not be suitable for your area or the type of use your lawn will experience. We shall discuss these points in later articles.
