Lawn Care DIY Tools & Products

A selection of quality tools

For most of us the option to have professional lawn care maintenance is simply beyond our means and in such cases the only option open is lawn care DIY. Like many tasks in the garden much of your success depends upon the quality of the equipment and materials used on your lawn.

Weed & Feed

Weed and feed mixtures are often the savior of a tired and struggling lawn but there are ways in which you can get the very most from such products. Always follow the manufacturers instructions as not all weed and feed products are the same. Often you will find that one type advises applying their product on a dry lawn whereas others say it is best to use their product on a slightly damp lawn.

Another point about weed and feed is that you need to ensure that you apply the correct amount at all times. One of the most common lawn care DIY mistakes is to get this wrong, using too much can burn the grass and too little will simply not work. You should always ensure that the mix is spread evenly and one way to ensure this is to use a spreader. Spreaders are available for all sizes of lawn ranging from hand spreaders for really small areas of grass to broadcast spreaders for larger lawns.

Frequency can be another potential problem area, applying your weed & feed too often is just as bad, if not worse than, applying it too rarely. A lawn suffering from too little feed will recover far quicker than one which has had too much feed.

Another important point to always keep in mind is that there are different products for the various times of the year. Products designed for use in the spring have been formulated to help produce the perfect balance for optimum growth. Summer products help maintain a lush green lawn whereas those meant for use at the end of the summer have been formulated to toughen up your grass ready for the winter. Applying one meant for spring at the end of summer will encourage the grass to grow when it should be storing up energy for the winter.

Other Lawn Care DIY Equipment

As I said earlier the better the quality of your tools and equipment the more likely it will be that you have the perfect lawn. One of the main reasons I said this was that such tools often make the tasks of lawn care DIY far easier and, if you think about it, the easier a job is to complete the more likely it will be that you will be happy to do such tasks as often as required. Of course you can complete jobs using cheaper equipment but it often requires more work.
