Regular Lawn Maintenance

The key to a quality lawn is regular lawn maintenance. Even an untidy and weed infested lawn can, eventually, become a lush green patch of grass to be proud of but such a lawn will require a great deal of time and effort but it is possible. Unfortunately any lawn that is neglected will begin to suffer and, in an incredibly short period of time, a lawn will display obvious signs of distress.

Mowing Your Lawn

Everyone knows that to keep a garden lawn looking great the grass needs to be kept short and this means that it needs to be cut from time to time. The best lawns often have short grass, rather like the green on a golf course, but to create such a lawn requires regular lawn maintenance on a grand scale, and this is one of the main reasons a golf course will have a number of green keepers!

Green keepers cut the grass very often and this approach can be slightly adjusted for using on residential lawns. The thing to remember, when cutting your grass, is that if you cut your grass too short too soon you can cause serious damage. It is far, far better to cut your grass higher but cut it more often. Gradually, over time, you can reduce the overall length of the grass but keep in mind that longer grass is much healthier than shorter and it is, therefore, more able to withstand the pressures of everyday use and the stresses caused by changes in weather.

Other Maintenance

The regularity of lawn maintenance does not only apply to cutting the grass, no, you should also water your lawn on a regular basis. When I say regular I do not mean often, if you water grass too often the roots will remain too short. Once a week should be sufficient and, if it has rained, you can even leave it longer. A simple way to determine how much rain has fallen on your lawn is to leave a small empty container to the side of the lawn, when it rains it will flow into the container at the same rate that it falls onto the lawn!

There are several other things which should be considered when looking at regular lawn maintenance and in the following articles in this section I shall be taking a look at ways in which this can be maintained by even the most busy of people. The next article takes a look at using scheduling to aid you in your lawn care regime.
