Create A Lawn Maintenance Schedule

A Weekly Schedule

In the previous article in this section of Landscaping Info 4U I introduced you to the concept that regular lawn maintenance was the key to creating the perfect lawn. In the following article I will show you how to organize your time, to make this possible, using a simple lawn maintenance schedule.

Take It Easy

Don't panic, maintaining a lush green lawn is not as difficult as it sounds and, if done regularly, it will not take up as much of your time as you may think. The most important thing to remember is that a little work done often is far better than a great deal of time spent on lawn care at irregular time periods. Lawns consist of lots of blades of grass and each is a living organism that requires certain things on a regular basis to grow well.

Creating a lawn maintenance schedule will enable you to organize yourself and get you used to doing these little jobs at the correct intervals so that the conditions created are perfect for optimum growth. After only a short time of following, your schedule, you will quickly become used to it and it will no longer seem like hard work.

The picture above shows a simple weekly schedule which can be created on any computer with a word processing application such as Microsoft Word (see our article about lawn care software for more details). If you have a program like Microsoft Excel this is perfect and I use this application for my own schedules and various other things too, including, I am sad to say, some of my computer duties!

Time management is crucial if you really want to extract the most from life and the simple use of a lawn maintenance schedule will ensure that you really do make the most of the little time you really need to spend tending your lawn and garden.

Getting Started

Before you get started on your maintenance schedule you will need to understand the basic requirements of your lawn. The best way to do this is to open a text document (or grab a pen and paper) and work your way through our lawn care section. Simply copy and past any important text into your document (or take down notes). When you have read all of the articles you should have a list of basic lawn care tasks such as cutting grass, watering and feeding etc. Make a special note of roughly how long each task should take and how often it should be done.

All you need to do then is make a note of your available free time and work out when it is best to do each particular lawn care task. Finally you can add all of these details into your lawn maintenance schedule and fix it in a prominent place, which is usually the door to your fridge!

If I eventually find time I will design a template for download but it is winter here so it may be spring before I get around to it.
