Introducing Natural Lawn Care
For most people who move into a new home natural lawn care is not high on their list of priorities and while we advise that you wait 12 months, after moving into a new home, before you start to plan and rework your garden this does not mean we advise neglect! One of the best ways in which to enhance the outward beauty of your home is by ensuring that your lawn looks as good as it can and natural, or organic lawn care is something you can begin very easily.
Easy Going Lawn Care
Always keep in mind that you do not always need powerful chemicals to maintain a lush green patch of green grass. Rather than using weed killers why not keep an old kitchen knife for cutting around persistent weeds and removing them. Just by removing one weed a day your lawn will soon become weed free and, if you ensure that you do not allow any to go to seed, your lawn should remain free of weeds for some time to come.
Spring and fall are the key times to indulge in a little natural lawn care as getting things right at the start of the growing season will ensure good growth and the correct treatment of your lawn towards the end of the year will ensure that it can cope with the oncoming winter weather and the stresses that come with it.
Ensuring Good Root Growth
When your grass begins to grow in spring you will need to ensure that it gets enough water but you must be careful not to water your lawn too often. If you water the grass too often the roots will not need to grow so far to discover the water but if you give it about an inch of water a week (applied in one go) the roots will grow much deeper and stronger. This will ensure that your lawn has a strong root system capable of extracting sufficient nutriments and it will be much more able to withstand periods of drought (plus it will recover much faster after such periods of no rain).
Natural lawn care is all about caring for your lawn naturally and in the wild grass will grow freely. On a residential lawn this would create an untidy and unruly patch of grass and weeds so cutting the grass is a real must. However, we can let our grass grow for a longer period between cuts which will enable it to extract the most benefit from the sun and help provide the best conditions for optimum growth of roots. Set your lawnmower to cut the grass from about 3 inches to 4 inches high, you can cut it slightly shorter if you can not cut it as often but do not cut it really short!
