Even the most highly respected gardener will tell you that growing roses successfully takes a lot of time, effort and patience. When they say this they are usually bending the truth a little, they are usually looking for praise and recognition for their wonderful displays of roses. By sticking to some very straightforward guidelines, virtually anyone can grow roses successfully.

Always be sure to select the healthiest looking bushes when buying roses. If you are not sure of what you are looking for just ask advice from a member of staff at the garden center, or preferably, take a friend along with you who knows what to look out for. Do not be tempted to save money and buy your roses at the end of the season when they are reduced in price. This is not advisable because it is usually the unhealthiest plants that are left over and marked down for a quick sale.

One of the many questions that needs asking with regard to growing roses is what variety of rose to choose. Be careful with your choice as some roses prefer cooler climates whilst others prefer warmer climates. The one thing that roses all have in common is the need of direct and natural sunlight for at least six hours per day.

Hints & Tips About Keeping Roses Healthy

Unfortunately rose bushes suffer terribly from infestations of green fly and other pests. To help keep this problem under control spray the plants with some form of insecticide or pesticide. Not only do insecticides come in spray form they can also be mixed in with fertilizer or water. Remember that any fertilizer used for growing roses needs to have the correct balance of potassium and phosphorous.

Another important factor to consider when planting your roses is to make sure that they are not cramped and squashed in between other shrubs and plants. Roses need plenty of room around them to allow the air to flow. By allowing the movement of air around the bush you are helping to prevent diseases, which at the end of the day, will be greatly beneficial to growing roses that are healthy.

Even though roses are traditionally grown outdoors, there are a few varieties that can be grown indoors. Please be aware though that the rose grown indoors will still need to be looked after in a similar way; pruned in the winter time and kept cool so the plant can lie dormant till spring arrives.
