Pruning Climbing Roses

The pruning climbing roses is just as essential as pruning any other variety of rose. If you have roses in your front or back yard, but are not quite sure how to go about pruning, then the following article should provide you with some easy to follow guidelines.

The thought of pruning climbing roses can be a rather daunting prospect to some people. There is really no need to feel this way as pruning is rather simple. As long as you know what and where to prune on your roses, then there should be nothing to feel nervous about.

Before you begin pruning climbing roses, always make sure that your secateurs are sharp and in good condition. If however you are pruning stems that are very tough and thick, or branches, then maybe a pair of garden loppers will be more suitable, as secateurs are only suitable for thinner stems.

Always be careful when you are pruning climbing roses that you do not prune them too far down. If you do this you may end up killing your roses by mistake (which is the last thing you want to do). On the other hand if you do not prune them down far enough you can impair the success of your roses the next year.

Whilst you are pruning, take into consideration the overall shape of your rose bush. Remove any stems or branches that look out of place, or are making the plant look untidy. To further enhance the shape of your rose bush, take away about a third of the old stems.

After you have finished pruning your climbing roses, there is one other thing you will need to do to ensure success the following year, and that is to tie in any new shoots that are growing. Just make sure that you use a suitable garden twine for this particular job. Once you have done this you will have to shorten and tie in some of the side shoots too.

If you are new to rose gardening, you will be wanting to try the easiest and more effectual method of pruning climbing roses. Even though there are other techniques to this process, the one mentioned is by far the simplest.

As with any new task, always take your time and do not rush things. It is when you rush things that mistakes are made. In time, your patience and diligence will be evident by the amazing flowers your roses produce in the spring.
