Yellow Roses Signify Friendship

The tradition of giving flowers is historic and roses are one of the most popular types of cut flower. Key to a successful rose variety is the color and growers continually battle to produce the most stunning, striking or unusual shades. Yellow roses are relatively new to the western world as they originate from the Middle East and were introduced after the various shades of red and pink.

While I have entitled this article "Yellow Roses Signify Friendship" the truth is that the yellow rose can have several meanings. Anything yellow is often associated with the sun (for the obvious reasons) and in the east the color is associated with wisdom as well as power and joy. In Europe, and in stark contrast, the color signified altogether more negative things such as jealousy and even dying love. Happily the more positive meanings from the East have prevailed and today the yellow rose has become to mean friendship and joy.

Many people give friends roses and the strong glow of a bouquet of yellow roses will light up anyone's face. However the type of friendship that the yellow rose signifies is varied, it can represent a strong friendship that borders on the feelings of love (but in a platonic sense rather that the romantic).

Alternatively, when yellow roses are given in a marriage they signify love. Rather than the fresh young love it stands for the more domestic contented love between long standing partners, an altogether more mature love of everlasting joy and contentment.

Yellow is a cheery color and many people choose to give yellow bouquets to people in hospital. More positively, it is also common to see yellow bouquets given to a new mother, especially when the sex of their new child is unknown, and in this respect it signifies congratulations.

To me it is somewhat confusing that there appears to be so many different meanings to the giving of yellow roses. I have even heard it said that they signify infidelity it love and, to be safe, I strongly recommend that you make your intentions clear in your little card rather than have somebody pick up on a totally wrong significance.

'Lowell Thomas' is my favorite yellow rose variety, I just love the curly nature of the flower, but there is an awesome selection of yellow varieties for growing in your garden. Yellow is an incredibly useful color and many wild flowers are often in this color and this means that a yellow rose will often go well with the other colors in your garden. If you are ever stuck which color to use always try yellow!
